MALAYSIA, BORNEO
TO THE TOP OF MONT KINABALU
December 1994

Above the clouds, on a clear day, we can see Mont Kinabalu which reaches 4,101 meters. This mountain is located on the island of Borneo, in the province of Sabah which is part of Malaysia. It is the highest peak in Southeast Asia. The coastal city seen on this picture is Kota Kinabalu.

Kota Kinabalu
This picture was taken from a small island where I went scuba-diving. A few days later, I climbed this mountain; it took two days to reach the top. The goal was to reach the top to see the sunrise. To achieve it, I had to get up at 4:00 a.m. to climb the last section, in the dark, in a cold and humid environment. These pictures are a recollection of this special adventure.

This door, in Kinabalu park, is the starting point of the trail that would bring me to the top of the Mountain.

Fog
On the first part of the journey, we are in a beautiful forest full of tropical trees, plants, and the fog.

Kinabalu TOP
This photo shows the top of the mountain as seen from the dormitory. We can see streams of rain water coming down the hill . It was a very rainy day, making the climb more difficult and the trail very slippery.

Kinabalu vegetation

The vegetation at the top
is very special, not tall but very colorful.

Kinabalu peak
One of the numerous peaks.

I descend slowly, enjoying the scenery , taking the pictures that follow. I enjoy the scenery. Coming down was very painful on my legs, worse than climbing. Upon reaching the bottom, exhausted, I could barely walk. During the drive back, I had time to reflect on the wonders that I had seen. A smile crosses my face as I take pride in my accomplishment .
